YPO’s In-School Opera program offers 30 minute productions of children’s operas that we bring on tour to your school. The performances include professional local opera singers, sets, costumes, and music. We choose operas that are written specifically for children in grades 1-6.
TOUR: The tour runs from January to March/April each year visiting approximately 35-40 schools annually.
The 2014 Schedule will be available in December 2013.
HOW DO WE PERFORM AT YOUR SCHOOL? Teachers and/or administrators who are interested in having the In-School Children’s Opera perform at your school can contact us regarding your interest; (see more details below). “The In School Opera has always held true to the YPO mission, to cultivate the love of opera and to promote opera education in the community,” says Producer, Julie Todaro. Since its inception, it is estimated that over 500,000 elementary children in public and private schools around South Florida have had the opportunity to view our professional programs of such operas as Hansel and Gretel, Ransom of Red Chief, Jack and the Bean Stalk, Cinderella, and Pied Piper. Many of the children would never have a chance to experience this genre of the arts if it weren’t for this In School Opera program.
The Production Team
The Young Patronesses of the Opera (YPO) organization began the In-School Opera (ISO) program in 1975 under the guidance of YPO member Louise Todaro, Producer, and Dr. Warren Broome, the Musical and Artistic Director. Louise produced the In School Opera from 1975 to 2006, when she became Producer Emeritus and handed the reigns over to her daughter, Julie Todaro, who now acts as the Producer and leads the Production team of volunteers.
These In-School Operas performances cost approximately $1800 per school to produce, however, there is NO COSTS to the schools. The project is subsidized by the fundraising done by the members of YPO and through donations and grants that are raised. If you would like to support the In-School Opera program, please send all donations to the address below.
WE LOVE NOTES FROM THE CHILDREN! If you had the show at your school, we’d love to hear from you and your students. Please send all letters and thank you notes to the contact information below.
